Kendall Tichner, from L.A., was out walking her dog on a baseball field when she thought she’d scan the ground for the elusive flora.
Tichner, who confessed she had never found one before, recorded the moment she plucked the plant.
A clip shared to her TikTok page, @ktichner, on Wednesday, has amassed more than 40,000 views. She says: “I’ve never found one before,” as someone off-camera says: “Let’s pick it and make sure it’s official.”
Tichner then holds it up for the camera.
She told Newsweek: “I was looking for it, I think the only way to find a four clover is to look for it— otherwise the micro greenery on a lawn all blends together.
“I found it in a clover patch in a random baseball field while I was playing fetch with my dog. I am a wild food forager so I am always slightly more in-tune to the plants around me than most people—but I do think anyone can find one!
“Things aren’t always about luck sometimes it’s about knowing what to look for.”
She says after finding the original she continued to look for more, with no success.
“Four Leaf Clovers are essentially a genetic mutation and apparently where there’s one, there are many. I did not find a second one and quickly recognized that continuing to look for more was a bit of a gambler’s mentality.
“I switched my focus to focus on the abundance I had in hand and to be happy with the four leaf clover I just found,” she added.
After finding the clover, she pressed it in between the pages of a book to keep it forever.
She said: “This was my first time finding a Four Leaf Clover! Oddly enough, I did expect to find one (bc I was consistently looking)—I just wasn’t sure when/where it would happen….”
And Tichner shared some tips for anyone hoping to find their own slice of luck, adding: “You too can “make your own luck.” Helpful hints to find a four leaf clover:
“Find a shady lawn + locate a clover patch. Clovers look different than grass.
“Narrow your focus to an area about the size of a school desk.
“Then, scan the leaves and look for differences in patterns. don’t look at each clover individually, trust your instinct. ie: sometimes the clover has prominent white markings—the leaves will make a repetitive shape that looks like triangles—in this case, you’d be looking for squares.
“Believe in yourself. the more often you search, the more likely you’ll find one.”
Commenting on the video, Chessy_Pee said: “Put it in a resin coin and keep it in your purse.”
Sunset.atyt thought: “You will have a lot of luck the next years.”
Emily Mcphedran suggested: “You should put it in a keychain and carry it with you everywhere.”
Amourissima commented: “I’ve been looking forever for like 40 years and this gave me so much hope that they actually exist!”
V.dora.dora said: “They usually grow near each other so when you find one it’s likely that there are more.”
Cassandra Presta wrote: “There’s about 1 in every 10,000.”
Presta isn’t wrong, as the Southern Conservation Trust confirmed the chance of finding a four-leaf clover is one in 10,000.
“There are no clover plants that naturally produce four leaves, which is why four-leaf clovers are so rare.
“If you’re lucky enough to find a four-leaf clover, look for more! If a clover plant produces a four-leaf clover, it’s more likely to produce another four-leaf lucky charm than plants that only produce three-leaf clovers.”
A three-leaf clover is known as a shamrock, as website Gardeningknowhow.com went into more detail, saying: “Four leaf clovers are believed to be mutations of the white clover.
“The number of leaflets on clovers is genetically determined. Tests have shown that phenotypic traits within the DNA of the cells of the plant may explain this phenomenon.
“In fact, the genes that produce four leaves are recessive to the genes that produce three. Generally speaking, the number of three leaf clovers for every four leaf clover is about 100 to 1. With odds like that, it is considered lucky to find one—not so much that it brings you luck.”
